Arranging the Service

There are many factors to consider when planning a service, including religious observations and ceremonies, and the wishes of the deceased.

A COMPLETE OR MEMORIAL SERVICE

These services are held in a venue such as a religious building or on the premises of the funeral director. With a complete service, the coffin is present during the service. With a memorial service, it is not. Usually, the service takes place before the cremation or burial.

GRAVESIDE OR CREMATORIUM SERVICE

These services are held in addition to, or in place of, a complete or memorial service and are usually attended by close family and friends only.

A PERSONAL AND MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE

Here are some of the things you may consider when arranging a personal service that is respectful to the deceased and meaningful to their loved ones.

  • Placing notices in local newspapers
  • Choosing the coffin and urn or gravestone
  • Where the service will take place
  • Viewing the deceased before or during the service, and dressing and preparing the deceased for viewing
  • Who will officiate at the service (for example, a religious official)
  • Who will say the obituary
  • The music to be played before, during and after the service
  • Whether there will be photographs of the deceased at the service (including digital displays, for example in a presentation)
  • The service programme – photographs, poems or other personal touches to be included
  • Flowers and wreaths, or donations to charity in lieu of these
  • Catering at the service
  • Transport for the deceased as well as close family members
